Understand your estimate

How to Use Your Heat Pump Savings Estimate for an Ottawa Quote

This estimates electricity needed to replace your annual space-heating fuel: litres × fuel energy × furnace efficiency ÷ heat-pump COP. Fuel energy uses Natural Resources Canada values of 25.3 MJ/L for propane and 38.2 MJ/L for oil (3.6 MJ = 1 kWh).

Floor area suggests a preliminary planning size: up to 1,200 sq ft → 2 tons; up to 1,800 → 2.5; up to 2,500 → 3; up to 3,200 → 4; larger homes → 5. It does not replace a heat-loss calculation or determine rebate eligibility.

Heat Pump Rebate Capacity and Eligibility Requirements

The Home Renovation Savings program advertises $1,250 per eligible rated heating ton, up to $7,500, for qualifying cold-climate air-source heat-pump purchases replacing eligible heating. The program uses rated heating capacity at 8.3°C (47°F), not floor area or nominal cooling size.

A participating contractor must confirm eligibility, qualifying equipment and preapproval before installation. Oil-heated homes must meet the program’s full electric replacement requirements. Rental incentives differ. Program terms can change; this calculator does not confirm an award.

Estimates assume the heat pump supplies the calculated annual heating load. Backup heat, cooling, hot water, fixed utility charges, financing, maintenance, future price changes and equipment degradation are excluded. Actual savings depend on weather, operation and system design. Payback is a simple energy-cost comparison. If the potential rebate exceeds the quote, the estimated remaining cost is shown as zero.

Propane & Oil Heat Pump Savings Calculator FAQs

Common questions about comparing heating costs and switching to a heat pump.

What does the propane and oil heat-pump savings calculator calculate?

It compares your annual space-heating fuel cost with estimated heat-pump electricity costs. It also shows estimated annual savings, a potential purchase rebate and simple payback when you enter an installation quote.

Which fuel-bill numbers should I enter?

Use a full year of propane or heating-oil delivery records and your average delivered price per litre. Include fuel used for space heating only. Exclude fuel used for hot water, cooking or other appliances.

Should I include my basement in the floor area?

No. Add the square footage of all floors above ground and leave out the basement. This follows the calculator’s preliminary equipment-size guide. Annual savings use your heating fuel consumption, including fuel used to heat the basement. Climate Works must assess the whole home, including any heated basement, before sizing your system.

What is furnace AFUE, and where do I find it?

AFUE is the furnace’s annual fuel utilization efficiency rating. Choose the rating that matches your equipment: 80% for mid-efficiency, or an available high-efficiency rating from 92% to 98%. Check the equipment documentation or ask Climate Works if you are unsure.

What electricity price and heat-pump efficiency does the calculator assume?

The default electricity price is $0.15 per kWh and the average heat-pump coefficient of performance, or COP, is 2.6. Both can be changed in the assumptions section. Use your marginal all-in electricity rate and a seasonal performance estimate appropriate to your system.

Does the calculator include backup heating and cooling costs?

No. It assumes the heat pump supplies the calculated annual space-heating load. Backup heat, cooling, hot water, fixed utility charges, financing, maintenance and future price changes are excluded. Actual operating costs depend on the home, weather and system design.

How is the potential heat-pump rebate estimated?

The calculator uses $1,250 per eligible rated heating ton, up to $7,500, for a qualifying purchase under the Home Renovation Savings program. Enter the minimum rated heating capacity at 8.3°C (47°F) supplied by your contractor. If you leave it blank, the floor-area tonnage guide is used only as a preliminary placeholder.

Does this estimate confirm my rebate eligibility?

No. A participating contractor must confirm eligibility, qualifying equipment and preapproval before installation. Oil-heated homes must meet the program’s full electric replacement requirements. Rental incentives differ, and program terms may change.

How does the calculator estimate payback?

Simple payback divides installation cost by estimated annual energy savings. It shows payback both with and without the potential rebate. Enter your total installation quote, including applicable taxes. If savings are zero or negative, there is no energy-savings payback.

Can I use the calculator without an installation quote?

Yes. Leave installation cost blank to compare annual heating costs and potential savings. Payback is shown only when a quote is entered. The example’s installation price is illustrative and is not a Climate Works quote.

Are the estimated savings or heat-pump size guaranteed?

No. Fuel usage, electricity rates, equipment performance and weather affect the result. The tonnage guide is for preliminary planning. Climate Works must assess your home and confirm heat-loss calculations, equipment sizing and installation pricing.

Will my calculation be included when I request a quote?

Yes. After calculating, select “Ask Climate Works to review this.” Your inputs and results fill the labelled estimate fields and message in the quote form. Review them, enter your contact details and send the request.

Check current eligibility and preapproval requirements with the Home Renovation Savings program, or ask Climate Works to review your estimate.
