Ontario’s Primary Home Retrofit Rebate Program

The Home Renovation Savings (HRS) program is Ontario’s primary home retrofit initiative. Backed by the province, it helps homeowners upgrade heating, cooling, insulation, and appliances with rebates that make energy-efficient improvements more affordable.

The program features two rebate paths, both funded through November 30, 2026. Climate Works can help you choose qualifying equipment, complete professional installation, and understand how rebates apply to your project.

Path A: Single Upgrades (No Assessment Required)

Skip the initial home energy audit and claim rebates on individual qualifying upgrades:

  • Heat pumps: Up to $7,500 for cold-climate air-source and up to $12,000 for ground-source.
  • Attic insulation: $1,000 to $1,250 back.
  • Solar & battery storage: Up to $10,000.
  • Smart thermostats: $75 to $100.
  • Appliances: Up to $200 back on eligible energy-efficient models.

This path is ideal when you want to upgrade one system at a time — such as replacing an aging air conditioner with a cold-climate heat pump or improving attic insulation before winter.

Path B: Multi-Measure Upgrades (Energy Assessment Required)

For deeper retrofits, you must book a registered energy advisor before starting work. By completing at least two qualifying upgrades — such as wall insulation, window or door replacement, or air sealing — you can unlock:

  • Up to $7,700 in rebates
  • An additional $600 bonus for completing the assessments and the multi-measure bundle

This path works well for whole-home efficiency projects where you are planning several improvements together.

Important Details

Time sensitivity

All projects must be completed and submitted before the program concludes on November 30, 2026. Plan your upgrade early so installation, inspections, and paperwork can be finished on time.

Eligibility checklist

  • You must be a homeowner in Ontario.
  • Heating bills must be in your name.
  • Rental properties may have additional restrictions.

Prior federal programs are closed

The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Canada Greener Homes Loan are closed to new applicants. The Home Renovation Savings Program is now the main provincial pathway for most Ontario homeowners pursuing retrofit rebates.

Expanded Ontario Energy Savings for Families

As part of Ontario’s plan to protect ratepayers and keep energy costs down, the province is expanding energy savings programs with new rebates for energy-efficient home appliances and stronger support for home retrofits.

Ontario’s energy efficiency framework represents the largest investment in energy-efficiency programs in Canadian history and is designed to help families save money while reducing strain on the electricity grid as demand grows across the province.

With electricity demand projected to increase over the coming decades, maximizing available grid capacity is essential. Many homes still rely on inefficient equipment, which increases energy use and drives up monthly bills. Accessible rebate programs help Ontario homeowners cut energy use, lower bills, and improve comfort.

New Rebates for Energy-Efficient Appliances

Under the Home Renovation Savings Program, eligible households can receive rebates of up to $200 on a wide range of energy-efficient appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, and laundry machines.

Appliances can be purchased from any retailer — online or in-store — and rebates are typically issued within 60 days of approval when eligibility requirements are met. Homes on Ontario’s electricity grid are eligible, including condos and apartments, as long as the appliance meets program criteria and replaces an existing, less efficient electric unit.

Enhancements to the program also include new attic insulation rebates without requiring a full home energy assessment, making it faster and easier for homeowners to apply and save. Attic insulation remains available through the assessment-based stream as well, giving you flexible options when planning renovations.

Quick Facts

  • The expanded programs build on energy-efficiency initiatives launched in early 2025, including rebates for insulation, smart thermostats, and rooftop solar.
  • Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program is designed as a streamlined “one window” approach to help homeowners access rebates for qualifying upgrades.
  • Program results to date show strong uptake, with significant energy savings and peak demand reduction already achieved across the province.
  • Provincial energy-efficiency investments are forecast to reduce peak electricity demand substantially by 2036, helping avoid costly new generation and keep rates more affordable for families.
