Water Heaters

Water Heaters OttawaIf you own a house, you own a water heater.

You probably don’t spend much time thinking about the water heater until, one morning, you go to take a shower and there’s no hot water. Then you probably think about it a lot. Water heaters have come a long way and are available in many variations. Let Climate Works help you determine the right type of water heater for your home, budget, and system.

Tankless Water Heaters

With much emphasis on homes ‘going green’, the tankless water heater is the ideal option. The tankless system heats water as you use it and provides an endless supply of water. This option can be costly and may require upgrades in your home.

Storage Water Heaters

Storage Water HeatersThese are by far the most common type of water heater in North America today. Ranging in size from 20 to 80 gallons (or larger) and fueled by electricity, natural gas, propane, or oil, storage water heaters transfer heat from a burner or coil to water in an insulated tank.

New energy-efficient gas-fired storage water heaters are a good, cost-effective replacement option for your current water heater. They have higher levels of insulation around the tank and one-way valves where pipes connect to the tank, substantially reducing standby heat loss.

For safety as well as energy efficiency, fuel-burning water heaters should be installed with sealed combustion (“direct-vented” or “power-vented). Sealed combustion means that outside air is brought in directly to the water heater and exhaust gases are vented directly outside, keeping combustion totally separate from the house air.

Indirect Water Heaters

Lower cost and maintenance are only some of the many benefits with this option. Indirect water heaters are efficient and easy to install with no additional upgrades required.

Indirect hot water heater as the indirect-fired system uses a boiler-based space heating for domestic hot water heating.

The water inside the insulated storage water tank is heated by the boiler, indirectly, while fluids are kept separate; they are not allowed to mix. Thanks to the insulated storage water tank, energy inside is kept longer while the furnace or boiler operates less often.

The indirect system permits hot water production year-round in great quantities and typically at a much higher efficiency than conventional water heaters. The indirect system is tied into your home’s space heating system and it will heat the water even if there is no need for space heating.

Continuous use of the boiler for heating domestic hot water is very good for the system as it prevents costly deterioration which occurs when the boiler is idle for long periods.

During the winter, when the indirect water heater is used for the home heating, only small fraction of the heat is used for domestic water heating. In summer all of the heat is used for hot water preparation.

Indirect hot water heater systems can heat water by using natural gas, propane, electricity, oil or solar energy. Heat pumps, gas or oil fired burners are used as the source of the heat.

Direct Vented Water Heaters

They have higher levels of insulation around the tank and one-way valves where pipes connect to the tank, substantially reducing standby heat loss.
